The Chennai Metro Rail is a rapid transit system being constructed to cater to the people of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. With a rapidly growing city and increasing traffic volumes, the project aims to provide the people of Chennai with a fast, reliable, convenient and economical means of public transport. Danfoss is providing its state-of-the-art VLT® HVAC Drives to the Chennai Metro Rail for operating tunnel ventilation fans.

The Chennai Metro Rail’s choice in Danfoss technologies follows the trust placed in Danfoss by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which already utilizes VLT® HVAC Drives in its rail network. The choice in Danfoss technology was also led through extensive testing at facilities in Gråsten in Denmark and Loves Park at Illinois in the US, with more than 35 different tests showcasing the functionalities of the VLT® HVAC variable frequency drives.

One of the many state-of-the-art technologies in Danfoss variable frequency drives is the ability to deal with contingencies such as fire, reliably helping in smoke extraction for saving lives. With the Fire Mode functionality, the VLT® HVAC Drive keeps running continuously regardless of alarms and warnings, without derating in high ambient temperature. In such events, frequency converters normally shut down due to overheating. However, the Fire Mode overrides shutdown, allowing the Danfoss drives to run as long as possible—right to the point of short-circuit, meltdown, or explosion, if necessary, to ensure smoke extraction fans run to the absolute maximum capacity to save lives.

With the Indian government’s goal to provide every Indian city with a population exceeding two million with a metro rail network, there are opportunities abound for partnerships to bring safety and reliability in everyday operations through state-of-the-art Danfoss technologies for a better tomorrow.
